Grant MacEwan Proposed to be Rezoned Urban Institutional
There will be a Drop-In Open House on Thursday, June 22, 2017 from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Grant MacEwan, 10035-156 Street. Administration is proposing to rezone the university to Urban Institutional which will permit Health Services and Extended Medical Treatment Services. These uses will permit a detoxification centre, a drug or alcohol rehabilitation clinic, a safe injection site, etc. This does not comply with the vision passed by city council which was “an intercultural interagency community hub for arts, recreation, wellness and learning.” Also, administration no longer makes reference to recreational use for the community.

State that administration must rezone Grant MacEwan to Direct Control NOT Urban Institutional so the uses are customized to what the communities and the Stony Plain Road BRZ support. Stress that you do not support Extended Medical Treatment Services or Health Services as a permitted use. Also, reaffirm that administration must support repurposing space in Grant MacEwan for recreational use as stated in city council’s vision.
Community Mailboxes
Recently, Canada Post has started to install 16 unit community mailboxes in mature neighbourhoods. West Jasper Place has a box on 155 Street near the corner of 97 Avenue and Sherwood has a box on 95 Avenue close to 155 Street. Other neighbourhoods include Britannia/Youngstown, Grovenor and Glenora. Apparently, these boxes are to service the new addressed developments. Canada Post will still deliver to the existing houses (for now). These community mailboxes are not very secure. One man installed our units. It is attached to a small cement slab with 4 bolts. The bolts could easily be unscrewed and the community mailbox removed and transported in the back of a pick-up truck.
We have been supplied with a number of postcards from the Canada Post union (CUPW). If you are interested in distributing some or sending one of these postcards to Prime Minister Trudeau stating that you want door to door service restored, please email Irene at 2puddycats@gmail.com Provide your name, address & phone number. State the number of post cards you require and I will drop them off in your mailbox.
West Valley Line LRT
Councillor Knack believes the west leg of the Valley Line LRT could be built within 18 to 24 months. The federal government has earmarked funding for this line and IF the province provides their share of the money, construction could start in conjunction with the south leg of the Valley Line LRT. Once funding is in place, land prices in our area will increase. If you know your house is a knockdown and you can wait, don’t sell until construction on the West Valley Line LRT is publicly announced.
Winter Carnival Update
On February 25, 2017 in collaboration with Kids on Track, Boys & Girls Club, and Fun Team Alberta, we had a large turnout of over 300 children and adults attend our Winter Carnival. Community league volunteers served chili with hot drinks. Bannock was prepared and cooked over outdoor fire pits. Carnival games included tug-of-war, kicksleds, ring and bean toss, skating and hockey. Our MLA Lori Sigurdson joined in the festivities and former Dynasty Oiler teammate Randy Gregg played hockey and gave pointers to aspiring young hockey players. A good time was had by all!
Annual General Meeting
The community league’s AGM will be held on Monday, April 10th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the community hall (9620-152 Street). Members are urged to attend. Positions currently open on the Board are Treasurer and Program Director. Members are encouraged to put their names forward.
