Streets Abutting 100th Avenue Still Illegally Closed

At the July 9th, 2014 Transportation Committee Meeting, councillors were presented with documentation from the Municipal Government Act and an email from a senior municipal advisor stating that all streets must be permanently closed by a bylaw. After Transportation stated that it was not necessary, council only accepted the documentation as information. I was advised, however, by the city auditor that we should pursue this further. Currently, we are in a very vulnerable situation. Since these streets are not legally recognized as being closed and the multi-use trail is also in road right-of-way, Transportation can widen 100th Avenue and open our streets without consulting with the community. Sustainable Development also used this loophole to advance a rezoning in the cul-de-sac of 154th Street that did not comply with the Residential Infill Guidelines. This resulted in the destruction of one mature tree and some shrubs on our multi-use trail.

West Jasper Place Winter Parking Ban Pilot Project

West Jasper Place was chosen by the City of Edmonton to participate in a pilot project. From November 1, 2014 to March 15, 2015, parking will be banned on one side of the residential streets. Signs are installed on the side of the street where no parking is permitted. Roads will now be plowed down close to the pavement. Questions or concerns about this pilot project should be directed to Bob Dunford, Director of Roadway Maintenance, email: transportationoperations@edmonton.ca. As well, notify your councilor of any concerns, email Andrew.Knack@edmonton.ca, or phone 780-496-8122. In the spring, please let them know if this pilot project was successful.

CoE Play and Save Summer Day Camps

The Play and Save Summer Day Camps are for children ages 2 to 12 from families that are unable to afford the regular cost of many summer programs. These camps do not differ in any way from the regular priced programs, however, the City of Edmonton Community Services subsidizes the programs to make them affordable for low income families. Families who could benefit may be a family who transitioned from a reserve; new to Canada; a single parent family who works more than one job; a family with many children; a single parent family who works in a low wage sector job; and a family who may be dealing with barriers to community participation which would include not having enough money or unable to afford child care. Space is limited, so phone 311 to register.

Sherwood Community Garden

There is interest in redeveloping a portion of the Sherwood Community Park (15430 - 93 Avenue) into a garden area. A committee of volunteers is required to work in partnership with the City of Edmonton to establish, develop, govern, and manage a garden once it is built. Attend a brief 1 to 2 hour meeting each month. Sherwood and West Jasper Place resident volunteers can take on as little or as much work as they are able to.
