This month, we reflect on the incredible legacies of two community pillars who shaped West Jasper Sherwood, while looking forward to a summer filled with theater, youth programs, and a new vision for our neighborhood.
Jim Andreakos: Devoted to Sports and Community
In February, our community said a final goodbye to Jim Andreakos, a man whose name was synonymous with local sports. Known affectionately as "the soccer guy," Jim passed away after a brave battle with illness, leaving behind a legacy of service that spanned nearly four decades.
Jim’s journey began in 1978 when he stepped up to coach so his sons could play. By 1979, he had become the registrar for the Edmonton West Zone, managing mountains of paperwork from his dining room table long before the era of computers. For 39 years, he ensured every child had a team to play on, balancing rosters and even registering hockey players until 1982.
Beyond the paperwork, Jim coached both indoor and outdoor soccer until 1997 and served as a dedicated field marshal. His commitment to our neighborhood led him to the Community League Board, where he served as President for 15 years (2001–2016). One of his proudest moments was the 2005 rededication of our playground alongside Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan. We owe much of our community's spirit to Jim’s tireless passion.

In Remembrance: Irene Blain
We also mourn the passing of Irene Blain on March 16, 2021. Irene was a true lifelong resident, having lived in the same West Jasper Sherwood home her entire life. This deep connection fueled her passion for community advocacy.

After a career at the U of A, Irene became a powerhouse for local civics. She was instrumental in addressing the revitalization of Stony Plain Road and served the league in multiple roles, including President, Civics Director, and Secretary. Her expertise in municipal processes made her a formidable voice at City Hall.
Outside of her advocacy, Irene was a devoted gardener known for her signature Saskatoon-rhubarb-raspberry preserves and a lover of cats, running a small cat-sitting service to share her affection with neighborhood pets. Our deepest condolences go out to her husband, Paul, and all who knew her. You can read more about Irene's life here.
