Welcome to our community update! We have several important updates regarding local development, upcoming social activities, and neighborhood news to share with you all.
EPCOR Water Main Modifications
As the City of Edmonton prepares for the West LRT expansion, EPCOR will be performing essential water infrastructure relocations throughout our community. This work involves moving water transmission and distribution mains, fire hydrants, and service lines that are currently in the path of the planned track extensions.
Construction is scheduled to take place during the April to October season. While individual projects vary in scale, most are expected to take between two and eight weeks to complete. For the latest updates on how this might affect your street, please visit epcor.com/construction.
Two Big Wins for Our Residents
We are proud to share two significant victories for our neighborhood regarding local land use and zoning.
On June 17, 2019, a proposal was brought to City Council for a direct control rezoning at 9504-153 Street. The developer sought to build a 37-unit apartment complex with commercial space, including a 125-patron bar, directly across from our school. Because this application did not align with the Jasper Place Area Redevelopment Plan (ARP), our community showed up in force. Sixty residents attended the hearing wearing green badges, and 25 individuals spoke before Council. Councillor Dziadyk noted he had never seen such a high level of community engagement. Thanks to this organized effort, Council denied the proposal and reaffirmed the importance of upholding the Jasper Place ARP.
In a second success on September 4, 2019, the Subdivision Development Appeal Board (SDAB) denied an appeal to subdivide 9739-155 Street into three small, non-conforming lots. Presentations from our league, alongside the city’s Subdivision Authority and Transportation department, successfully convinced the board to uphold the original denial of the application.
In Memory of Wilma DeBoer
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wilma DeBoer on July 30, 2019. Wilma was a dedicated pillar of our community, serving many years in various volunteer roles on the community league board. We offer our deepest condolences to her family and friends during this time; she will be greatly missed.
