Stay informed and get involved with our community this summer! From local safety updates to exciting volunteer opportunities and family activities, here is what is happening in West Jasper Place and Sherwood.
City of Edmonton Big Bin Event
Clear out the clutter and reclaim your space! On August 17th and 18th, the City of Edmonton is hosting a Big Bin Event at 9200-163 Street from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
This is the perfect opportunity to drop off unwanted furniture, mattresses, large household appliances, computers, and televisions. Items will also be accepted for the Reuse Centre to help give your old belongings a second life. Please note that hazardous waste—including paint, varnish, household cleaners, and batteries—cannot be accepted at this event.
Kids on Track Summer Day Camp
Looking for a fun and engaging summer for your children? Kids on Track is offering day camps for children entering grades 1 through 6. Running from July 8th to August 15th, these camps take place at various locations across West Edmonton. Programs are designed to be both educational and fun, featuring character building, hands-on learning, and exciting daily field trips.
Cost: $150/week for the first child and $100/week for additional family members (plus a one-time $10 administration fee). Subsidies of 50% to 100% are available for those who qualify. For more details, call 780-481-2942 or visit www.kidsontrack.org.
Community Crime Update
Staying vigilant helps keep our neighborhood safe. Recent data shows specific trends in our area over the last 60 days:
- West Jasper Place: South of 100 Ave, theft from vehicles remains the most common concern. North of 100 Ave, break and enters are more frequent. There were four reported license plate thefts and four break and enters in this period.
- Sherwood: Theft from vehicles is the primary concern, followed by assault, with 3 thefts and 2 assaults reported recently.
Safety Tip: Most police stations offer free locking screws for your vehicle’s license plate to prevent theft. Contact the West Division at 780-496-8525 to see if they have screws compatible with your vehicle.

Join Councillor Andrew Knack for a Community Conversation and Town Hall meeting on Tuesday, July 23, 2019. The meeting runs from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Boys & Girls Big Brothers Big Sisters West Club (16030 104 Avenue).
Come early! The BBQ will be fired up from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM, so stop by for a hot dog and a chat before the meeting begins. Click here to view the event poster.
Casino Volunteers Needed
Every two years, our Community League has the opportunity to participate in an AGLC-designated casino. These events are vital, as the funds raised allow us to maintain our hall, rink, and tennis courts. To receive this funding, we must provide a team of volunteers.
Our next casino dates are Wednesday, August 21 and Thursday, August 22, 2019, at the Starlight Casino in West Edmonton Mall. If you have never worked a casino before, don't worry! An experienced advisor will be on-site to train and support you throughout your shift.
Volunteer Perks:
- A free meal from the casino restaurant.
- Additional breaks.
- Reimbursement for taxi transportation or babysitting services (with receipts).
If you can help, please let us know your preferred position and shift by Thursday, July 18th, 2019. Click here for more information on positions and schedules.
Thank you for supporting the continued operation of our league!
